Dimout is a curtain fabric that darkens a room strongly. It cuts most of the daylight and keeps the room dim and cool during the day, but it lets a little light through; it is not made for total darkness. Rooms that must go pitch dark need a full blackout instead.
How does dimout fabric work?
The darkening comes from the weave. The yarns are woven densely, so little light passes between them. Our dimout fabrics are uncoated: the effect comes from the weave itself, not from a coating. That keeps the fabric soft and easy to drape, and it can be machine washed.
Where is dimout used?
- Hotel rooms: so guests can rest during the day
- Hospital rooms: for patients' rest
- Schools, conference and meeting rooms: for projection and presentations
- Homes: bedrooms and children's rooms
Flame-retardant and inherently flame-retardant dimout
In public buildings such as hotels, hospitals and schools, the specification often sets the curtain's fire performance too. On request we can make our dimout fabrics:
- Flame retardant: with a finish that delays ignition
- Fire resistant: so the fabric does not carry a flame or spread a fire
- Inherently flame retardant (IFR): woven from flame-retardant yarn rather than treated afterwards, so the property does not wash out
Tell us which standard your project requires and we will choose the fabric and finish with you. See our guide to flame-retardant contract curtains for more.
Dimout fabric from the manufacturer
Tokdemir Tekstil has made curtain fabrics in Bursa, Türkiye, for more than 45 years. As a dimout fabric manufacturer we weave on our own looms in our own mill, so we can hold the same colour across batches and plan contract quantities on our own schedule. All our fabrics are 100% polyester.
