Blackout or dimout: what is the difference?

Both control light, but they do different jobs. How to pick the right one for your room.

Blackout or dimout: what is the difference?

When choosing a curtain fabric, the first question is how much light you want in the room. Blackout and dimout are two different answers.

Blackout: full darkness

Blackout fabrics block light and darken the room completely. They suit places that need darkness during the day too, such as hotel and hospital rooms, conference halls and meeting rooms.

Dimout: strong darkening

Dimout fabric darkens the room strongly but lets a little light through; it is not made for total darkness. It suits rooms that should be dim rather than pitch dark.

We make several dimout fabrics. Dimout is 260 g/m², 300 cm wide and comes in our widest range of 41 colours. 99% Dimout and Linen-Look Dimout are rated 9 out of 10 for light blocking, and Double-Sided Dimout has a different colour on each face.

Which one?

If the room must go fully dark for sleep, rest or presentations, choose blackout. Where a strongly darkened room is enough, dimout is a good fit. Both can be paired with a sheer in front. As a dimout fabric manufacturer, we can send samples so you can compare them in your own room.
